The Freedom of Forgiveness

The Freedom of Forgiveness, Our Lenten Journey
During Lent 2017 we would like to probe the act of forgiveness.

This week’s question is:

What is Forgiveness?

Generally, forgiveness is a decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge.  The act that hurt or offended you might always remain a part of your life, but forgiveness can lessen its grip on you and help you focus on other, more positive parts of your life.  Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy and compassion for the one who hurt you.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you deny the other person’s responsibility for hurting you, and it doesn’t minimize or justify the wrong.  You can forgive the person without excusing the act.  Forgiveness brings a kind of peace that helps you go on with life.  Letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for happiness, health and peace.  Forgiveness can lead to:

  • Healthier relationships
  • Greater spiritual and psychological well-being
  • Less anxiety, stress and hostility
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Fewer symptoms of depression
  • Stronger immune system
  • Improved heart health
  • Higher self-esteem

What does the Bible say?

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (Chapter 4, Verse 31-32) states that our new life in Christ “demands forgiveness”.  James 2:13: “For God will not show mercy when he judges the person who has not been merciful; but mercy triumphs over judgment”.  Hebrews 12:15:  “Guard against turning back from the grace of God.  Let no one become like a bitter plant that grows up and causes many troubles with its poison”.

Need help getting started forgiving?

PRAY!  Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  Prayer isn’t complicated.  Unlike learning to play a musical instrument, it doesn’t take months or years to learn how to do it.  We are made for prayer.   Everyone is a “natural” when it comes to prayer.  Don’t be afraid to “pray your feelings”.  Forget how you’re supposed to feel.  How do you feel?  Talk to God about that.  If you’re angry, say so.  Ask for His help.  There are more tears shed over answered prayers than over unanswered prayers.
